Inside: The Living Legend
- The CFU thing? It's entirely, one-hundred-percent possible that this is going on, somewhere in the world, right this very minute. And sadly, it probably is.
- This book was in development for five years. Yes, five. (I know.)
- In the original version of this story, Trick, the hero, came complete with his very own De Clerambault's Syndrome stalker.
- The Living Legend was, once upon a time, slated for Silhouette's Intimate Moments line. But since I can't say hello in 65k words, I rewrote (and rewrote and rewrote and rewrote) until I'd gotten covered all the material these characters had offered up over the years.
- The Living Legend is mostly set in Eveleth, Minnesota, home of the United States Hockey Hall of Fame.
- Not far from there is the Hull Rust Mahoning Mine, an open pit mine so large the crater is visible from space. I have an abiding fascination for the area. Every time I visit, it feels like home. Which should not surprise those of you who know the fetish I have for geology and shiny things.
- Trick, the hero, was modelled after actor Oded Fehr, that Ardeth Bay guy from The Mummy.
- I had no physical model for Kate, the heroine. She started out being merely a fixture in the story for His Royal Highness to play off of. Fortunately for us all, Kate decided she'd had enough of that crap and busted my door down one morning, demanding her upgrade from ottoman status. Ever since, I've had a very clear picture of her in my mind, and no model or actress even comes close.
- Right now, there are other Sanction books in development. You'll meet some of The Living Legend characters again, although not the ones you might expect, in ways I never would have imagined, either, until they informed me of their intent.
Arthur and Layne Crawford are really the backbone of the possible series. One character you'll most likely see featured in his own story is Alex Crawford. Jason White and David Brighton may see page-time again as well.
- Now, lest I disappoint my editor Imogen Howson, I will mention that David Brighton is a central figure in The Living Legend. If you're a regular Emmatyvillager, you may have noted Immi's frequent -- and unsubtle -- requests that he has his own story. But I have to be honest. There are problems with that idea. One, he's only 16 in TLL. Does the word jailbait mean anything to anyone? And second, he's a dirty scene stealer, and I'm still annoyed with him. If and when I ever forgive him, he may rise from "possible" status.
- Post-David-tantrum, I must confess that David and Trick were a package deal from the very start. They always seemed to gravitate around a concept like that of the Eveleth facility, and I cannot thank Samhain Publishing enough for letting that connection play itself out.
- Though Trick's been through more plots than I've been through Krispy Kreams in my life, the CFU thing was an idea I got over ten years ago while ordering office supplies online. Proof that you just never know when or where inspiration might strike.
- You may not know it, but this will not be the first time Layne Crawford has made an appearance in Romancelandia. She is a compilation of M from the Bond movies, and my dear friend Elise (and partly Ed) O'Loughlin, who got first billing in TLL's acknowledgement section for answering stupid writer questions at 4 a.m.
The Dedication
For my beautiful things. All of this, always, is for you.
Acknowledgements
The author would like to thank the following people for their contributions:
Ed and Elise O'Loughlin: We really need to get together sometime so you can pull my hair out instead of your own.
Brian Hunter: My own personal David. Poor guy.
The Gonnabeez: If I thanked each of you, the list of names would be longer than the book. But your help has not been forgotten. Thank you.
My FYT girls: So many of you have put so much into this story, the book should be dedicated to you. And you would have gotten away with it, too, if it weren't for those meddling kids.
Imogen Howson, Angela James, Vanessa Hawthorne, and the rest of the Samhain Crew: A new beginning for my new beginning. Thank you for your help, guidance, and this opportunity.
Lastly, my family: You've lived through the making of this book, and all you got was this lousy acknowledgement. But I love you, and you're still my most beautiful things. The t-shirts are on their way.
